"peace is only possible through nonviolence..." About Us
In past years, a small number of Puget Sound organizations and churches have participated in the annual Gandhi-King Season for Nonviolence. Now, with Interfaith Works as the catalyst and coordinator, several local agencies, organizations and faith communities are joining together to teach and promote nonviolent principles and practices in our families, schools, community and world in 2006 and beyond.
The international campaign started in 1998 to honor the work of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, commemorate their assassinations in 1948 and 1968, respectively, and carry on their life teachings. Spearheaded internationally by the UN, Gandhi Institute, the Association for Global New Thought (AGNT), and organizations like the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR), this public education campaign has now grown to be active in more than 200 communities worldwide.
In 2000, the importance of the campaign was underscored by an Appeal of the Nobel Laureates, signed by all living Peace Prize winners, calling for a "Decade of a Culture for Nonviolence," and asking, in part:

That non-violence be taught at every level in our societies during this decade, to make the children of the world aware of the real, practical meaning and benefits of non-violence in their daily lives, in order to reduce the violence, and consequent suffering, perpetrated against them and humanity in general. Together, we can build a new culture of non-violence for humankind which will give hope to all humanity, and in particular, to the children of our world. |
AGNT www.agnt.org has become the primary source of information about programs and information available about SNV activities around the world. The national Fellowship of Reconciliation www.for.org and Center for Nonviolent Communications www.cnvc.org are also very active in producing and disseminating information and programs and information about nonviolence for today's world. The South Sound Coalition for the Season for Nonviolence is organized and administered by Interfaith Works www.interfaith-works.org - IW is a 50l( c)(3) organization so any donations toward the events or activities of the Season are tax-deductible -- and appreciated.
