"peace is only possible through nonviolence..."
Welcome to the South Sound's
"A Season for Nonviolence"
website
The United Nations has declared 2000-2010 the "International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World." Ten Nobel Peace Prize winners have appealed to us all to do what we can to teach the principles and practices of personal and political nonviolence, and to involve our schools, churches, community organizations, and others in reducing violence in our own lives, our families, our neighborhoods, our communities, our country, our world.
Here in Washington State, Governor Christine Gregoire has proclaimed the period January 30 - April 4, 2006 the "Season for Nonviolence" (see Proclamation ). She too calls upon all of us to do whatever we can to promote nonviolence and reduce violence during that time. Many Thurston County individuals, organizations and groups have stepped forward to respond to the call.
No one better epitomizes the successful application of nonviolence than Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The national Gandhi-King Season for Nonviolence is a 64-day educational, media, and grassroots campaign dedicated to demonstrating that nonviolence is a powerful way to heal, transform, and empower our lives and our communities. Inspired by the 50th and 30th memorial anniversaries of Gandhi and King, this international event forwards their vision for an empowered, nonviolent world. This website is the local expression of that campaign.
