Court for Mother's Day action at Sub Base Bangor

Thursday, January 5th, 2012, 1:30 pm
Kitsap District Court, 614 Division St, Port Orchard, Rm 105

Seven of us blocked the road to the base with the banner, THE EARTH IS OUR MOTHER, TREAT HER WITH RESPECT. We were arrested and charged with unlawful walking on roadway. We are contesting the charge.

This was a citizen's intervention. At stake is the continued deployment of nuclear weapons, in particuler the Trident submarine with its 24 missiles, each with 4-6 huge nuclear bombs.

Occupy Trident

January 14th

"An invitation to be aware, to connect, and to participate"

"Non-cooperation with evil is as much a moral obligation as is cooperation with good." Martin Luther King Jr.

"Occupy Trident" for 2012 is Ground Zero's Center for Nonviolent Action (GZCNA) theme for remembering Dr. Martin Luther King on his holiday. On January 14th we will meet at Ground Zero to customarily plan and then act in the afternoon to challenge the United States government to end the Trident nuclear weapons system. As an immoral and internationally illegal system, the Trident system also is part of the increasingly costly nuclear weapons system, affecting the economy, jobs, and people's lives. Shift the resources to strengthen the nation.

What is Trident? In brief, 14 nuclear submarines carry 24 missiles each with multiple warheads with the capacity of devastating cities many times the explosive power of the atom bombs used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Eight of them operate out of Sub Base Bangor on the Hood Canal. Some facts (GZ fact sheet, 2007):

  • Number of kilotons on ONE Trident W76 warhead: 100
  • Number of kilotons on ONE Trident W88 warhead: 455
  • Total number of kilotons deployed on Trident Fleet: 345,600
  • Number of kilotons on atomic bomb which was dropped on Hiroshima: 14
  • Number of nuclear warheads based at Sub Base Bangor: 2,364
  • Cost of one Trident II D-5 missile: $66,000,000
Costly, affecting the economy and jobs: The United States is now spending more on nuclear weapons than during the Cold War. A recent study found that for every $1,000,000,000 military spending creates 11,200 jobs while domestically, the same dollars would create 26,700 jobs in education. Political Economy Research Institute, University of Massachusetts Amherst.

"During the Cold War, the United States spent, on average, $35 billion a year on its nuclear weapons complex. Today, it spends an estimated $55 billion. The nuclear weapons budget is spread across the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, and the Department of Homeland Security ...

"So, why is America's nuclear capacity expanding even as it tells the world it plans to forsake its arsenal? A few little known facts about the nuclear weapons complex provide some answers:

  1. Old bombs don't die, they zombify.
  2. Disarmament is happening at a snail's pace.
  3. Funding for the nuclear weapons complex is growing.
  4. We're developing the next generation of nuclear weapons."
Then too, "At a time when federal programs are being scrutinized for fat, the NNSA's (National Nuclear Security Administration) 2012 budget is increasing by 19% to $7.6 billion." "We're Spending More on Nukes Than We Did During the Cold War?!", by Alan Weinstein, Mother Jones, Nov 9, 2011. http://www.motherjones.com/145326

Illegal: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in an advisory opinion found that nuclear weapons are illegal in 1996, based upon International Humanitarian Law. "A threat of use of nuclear weapons should ... be compatible with the requirements of the international law applicable in armed conflict, particularly those of the principles and rules of international humanitarian law ... (The Court concluded that the threat of use of nuclear weapons) would generally be contrary to the rules of international law applicable in armed conflict, and in particular the principles and rules of humanitarian laws." NUCLEAR WEAPONS & INTERNATIONAL LAW: A NUCLEAR NONPROLIFERATION REGINE FOR THE 21ST CENTURY, FORDHAM INTERNATIONAL LAW JOURNAL, Vol 34, April 2011, Number 4, p 639.

Since 1977, GZCNA, usually referred to as GZ, has been resisting the Trident with vigils, citizen interventions, and numerous events to create awareness and to resist this immoral, illegal, and unconscionable system. We invite all to join us on January 14th. (9:00 to 4:00 approx.)

GZ: 16159 Clear Creek Rd NW, Poulsbo, WA 98370

We seek to create a country and a world where humans and the environment can live securely and safely.

India Going West In A Big Way
Bernie Meyer Goes East In A Big Way
How does the twain meet?

Bernie Meyer returned from India in October, his 11th trip to bring Gandhi's message since 2005. His portrayals in diverse places and venues recast Gandhi's way to the realities of our world now.

"I experience the best and the beauty of India's people, while being exposed to the worst of humanity's choices. Moving and exciting, heart warming, yet disconcerting, fun with the pinch of fear."

If you want to get the highlights of West-East today through the return of Gandhi, "The Father of India," to his homeland in the person of Bernie.
