History and Partnerships

Sustainable South Sound (SSS) was formerly known as the Sustainable Community Roundtable of South Puget Sound. SCR was formed in 1991 under the leadership of Dorothy Craig. It was one of the nation's first grassroots organizations promoting the vision and principles of sustainability. Along with Sustainable Seattle, SCR pioneered citizen-initiated indicators of sustainability. Craig led the organization until 2000.

Partnering with SSS
The current programs of SSS, Buy Local and Urban Agriculture, began as projects independent of SSS, but their leaders decided that there was value in connecting with the mission of fostering sustainability and so partnered and became part of the organization. If you have an idea or project that you think fits with this mission and acts to achieve or promote sustainability in South Puget Sound, please consider a partnership with SSS - guidance for which can be found here.

Two non-profits were spun off the foundations laid by SCR. Lisa Smith formed Enterprise for Equity, a non-profit that trains entrepreneurs how to successfully start and develop their own businesses. Fertile Ground Community Center was established to be a model for sustainability in our community. Fertile Ground Guesthouse was formed as a for-profit to fund the Community Center. Karen Nelson and Gail DiMarzo manage the Fertile Ground Community Center and Guesthouse.
