music holds the key...

Welcome to Sound Kids's website!

Congratulations Olympic View Elementary in Lacey!

They are the worthy recipients of the Sound Kids "Get in the Groove Project" for the 2011-2012 school year!

This grant will bring infusion of expertise and volunteer help to help fill the school day with more music and movement. This includes workshops for classroom teachers, a school drum club, a school ukulele group, energetic musical school assemblies, a song and rhythm station on the playground, and hopefully music and movement in the faculty room!

The background of the Get in the Groove Project began when Sound Kids Drum and Dance started to raise some questions.
Can more music and movement in a school--

  • help build cohesion among students?
  • prevent teacher burnout?
  • reduce conflict?
  • prevent teacher burn out?
  • bring more joy to the lives of the people, young and old, in the school?

We wanted to find out!
Sound Kids took applications from elementary schools this fall for the Get in the Groove Project, a $2,500 grant to bring more movement and music to the school and try to evaluate its impact. The folks at Olympic View Elementary, under direction of music specialist Joyce Hancock, put forth a great team to help us answer these questions. It should be a great year!

Stay tuned, as we report our findings as the year unfolds!

We believe music holds the key for kids to feel connected and valued.
