About Us

Like most things in life the story of Rhythm & Spice is a long one - at least for a band that only started performing in August 2006. You could only really understand us as a group if you begin to know us as individuals - and those are very long stories. But we have come together to enjoy making music, primarily with percussion instruments. Many of us have been or are still part of another local percussion band known as "Planet Percussion" http://www.planetpercussionband.com/ and if you like world percussion music you will want to check them out. But more directly this group grew out an informal group known as "Drum Fun," which is a local drum circle and you should check out their website at http://www.oly-wa.us/drumcircle/ - especially if you would like to get involved. There was one more root to this growing thing, a short lived backup group for some women that were doing belly-dance. So when you put all of that together you will begin to understand us.

In any case we are an intentionally informal group that are comfortable making impromptu music to suit the occasion. We have done a couple fundraisers and played during the local Arts Walk during our short time performing. We can play for many needs/events, such as:

• background music
• 'regular' show
• audience participation
• music instruction/participation
• dance music
• dance instruction
• ... and any combination of these

We primarily use drums and other percussion instruments but we do not have a strict rule about that. And while a number of our rhythms are specifically from the Middle East we are certainly not limited to that area. Usually we don't have vocals to our music but we have a couple with words, and more coming if we find someone who likes to sing.

To put it simply: "We have fun with rhythm and music."
