If you have other skills, there are a lot of ways to get involved. Help us paint the shelter, make repairs, can our home-grown food, prepare the Saturday Supper, or build new furniture for the shelter.

The volunteer work parties are every Saturday from 1 to 5pm. Work parties are followed by Saturday Supper at 6:00pm. Saturday Supper Bread & Roses' volunteer hosts serve a gourmet meal every Saturday evening.

Admission/cost.. by donation

During 2012, Geshe Jamyang Tsultrim will personally lead guided meditations every Thursday night at our 7 PM practice. The guided meditations, and following discussion periods, will instruct practitioners in the fundamental meditation practices of Shamatha (calming the mind, or one-pointed concentration) and Vipassana (insight into nature of reality and consciousness). These are the two essential skills for transforming your mind to uncover your own true and essential nature of infinite wisdom and infinite compassion. Progress in these meditation skills will greatly enhance your own satisfaction, contentment and joy in life and consequently greatly benefit your friends, family and associates.

Geshe has transformed Thursday night meditations into a yearlong teaching on the three fundamental stages of meditation:

  • Jan, Feb, Mar: Self-awareness and Self-compassion
  • Apr, May, Jun: Altruistic Thought and Action
  • Sep, Oct, Nov: Calming and Transforming the Mind

Geshe Jamyang leads a busy life and has not always been this available, to teach weekly -- thus the "exceptional opportunity". He is a former Tibetan Buddhist monk, a highly trained and accomplished meditation instructor, a master of classical Buddhist philosophy, and, more recently, a practicing mental health counselor and part time professor at Evergreen State College. He's fluent in English, an engaging and accessible speaker, and an accomplished teacher.

If you've always wanted to have more instruction and understanding of meditation, this is the time. It's a great opportunity for in-depth instruction and experience.

All this instruction is essentially free. It will all occur as part of our regular Thursday night practice. We will encourage you to become a member of Nalanda Institute and support our activities with regular pledges or at least a weekly "dana" donation at the meditation hall, but those will be donations, not a formal charge.
